Katie sees architecture as an opportunity to create an environment that both serves a function and supports its users.
Katie first developed a strong interest in design which enhances her community during her undergraduate education at Wentworth Institute of Technology. While she used her architectural training to volunteer locally, Katie’s graduate thesis brought her to Haiti, where she conducted humanitarian work. In 2010, Katie served as a volunteer with Architecture for Humanity in Haiti, contributing to the emergency response and disaster relief efforts to rebuilding Haiti following the landmark earthquake. In 2012-2013, she returned to Haiti as an employee of a UK-based NGO, working on long-term development of four public schools in Port-au-Prince.
Katie sought to not only improve the school buildings, but also the social and organizational methods. Additionally, she researched the systems and methods for traditional and emerging construction in Haiti. Her work with local consultants, the Ministry of Education, school directors, students, and neighborhood residents provided her with valuable skills in community-focused design. Katie returned to her former employer, Burt Hill/Stantec, where she was involved in numerous public and private project types, including higher education, corporate interiors, transportation, retail, religious, and healthcare.
