katie kernizan
senior associate + K-12 sector leader
Katie sees architecture as an opportunity to collaborate, support, and celebrate communities.
Katie first developed a strong interest in community-centered design during her graduate studies. While she uses her training to volunteer locally, Katie’s thesis inspired her to conduct humanitarian work abroad, contributing to the K-12 school relief efforts following Haiti’s landmark earthquake in 2010.
While she has been involved in numerous public and private project types, Katie’s current work at Saam continues to focus on local education projects. As the K-12 sector leader, she has a strong interest in the educational planning process within K-12 design. She enjoys collaborating with school districts to maximize the functionality of the built spaces to support their unique needs. Through simple forms, clear sightlines, efficient systems, and appropriate materials, Saam’s school design goals celebrate learning, creativity, movement, well-being, and safety.
In addition to being a licensed architect in Massachusetts, Katie is a member of the AIA, is MCPPO-certified, and serves on the Board of Trustees for a local public charter school in Boston.
