Pawtucket Public Library Restoration

The Pawtucket Public Library consists of the original 1902 Sayles Library Building and the adjacent 1896 Burns Building, which was originally a post office. There had been signs of water infiltration at the original entry rotunda to the old post office.

This project required the assessment of existing conditions and recommendations for repair and restoration of the library’s historic Burns Building Rotunda, including copper roof repairs, historic wood window replacements, plaster repairs, and terracotta features replication. Saam and Adams & Smith were engaged to conduct an assessment of the original building, identify areas of possible water infiltration, and work with the Rhode Island Historic Preservation and Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) to develop a scope to repair and/or replace deteriorated features. These repairs were part of an ongoing effort to maintain the library structures in an historically accurate manner.

The project team was involved in all phases of the repair and restoration work from the initial investigation through construction administration and worked with library planner Adams & Smith.
